Legalizing Sports Betting in the US
Is Georgia legal sports betting state? The answer is yes, as long as you know what you are doing. The brief overview for the legal states is included, along with updates to follow as events take place. Updated on October 3, 2021
After the drafting of the Georgia Lawmakers Resolutions, which legalized sports betting in the state, and its signing by Governor Deal, sports betting was once again allowed. However, with all the excitement and enthusiasm, some lawmakers were less than thrilled with the entire situation. In November, lawmakers had introduced bills that sought to codify the Georgia law regarding gambling. These attempts had, however, failed to gain the support of the House and Senate, which passed the resolutions without the addition of such measures.
First, let’s look at the timeline. On September 6th, the Bulldogs actually took the field for their first official game of the year. The game was played at the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which is located in Downtown Atlanta. According to the point giver, Georgia State University will be the home team for the first official sports bets of the2019 season. This means there will be at least two new games being played at the new stadium during the upcoming soccer season.
This means that lawmakers had to push harder to get the bill through the legislature. After all, they knew that Georgia was already approved to open up sports betting within the state. There was no need to wait for the approval of the Bulldogs’ potential move to a new stadium. Unfortunately, this isn’t the end of the story. Georgia still has one more bill waiting for its passage in the House.
What makes the timing of the second bill significant is the fact that the Bulldogs are moving forward with their move to the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium. However, it doesn’t look like the Georgia State Legislature will have the same appetite for legalizing sports betting. This is why I believe the next bill for legalized gambling in the state will be a different proposal. I expect it to be a standalone bill, which will garner support from both the House and Senate. Once again, there is a possibility that the legalization bill could fall apart in the Senate, which would mean another battle for approval in the Georgia House. If the House passes a legalization bill, it means that it will be heading into a special session with only seven days remaining until the special session convenes.
When it comes to the time to start betting on the Bulldogs for the 2021 season, many experts predict that the first games will be held in the new jersey. Considering that the NFL has moved the annual draft to summer, you could argue that the annual draft in January has become somewhat redundant. The new jersey will be welcoming back Georgia Tech alum Mark Richt, who is widely considered to be the best head coach in the SEC. Another favorite is Joker Phillips, who has been the interim head coach for the past two seasons. Many think the Bulldogs will once again challenge for the SEC East division in the coming years. If they can capture the division, they stand a good chance at capturing the coveted No. 1 seed and a spot in the College Football Bowl Game.
However, if the Georgia State Legislature moves ahead with legalizing sports betting, it will be interesting to see if the NCAA and Georgia State University decide to boycott future games in the state due to a potential law that would open the door for corruption in college sports. For some, this could be a serious issue if the SEC or the Georgia Bulldogs are set to play in the upcoming years in the Peach State. Georgia has a solid athletic program, but they also have the reputation of being an elite program that relies on big names and high-quality players. If the Bulldogs are unable to fill the seats in the Georgia Dome due to a law that will legalize sports betting, will the SEC consider moving their annual baseball tournament out of the state?
